Feigning normality since 1973

Seven months is not enough

Filed in: TV & Movies.

I got an itch today to check out what was available in the way of TV sets. There's nothing wrong with my current one, except for the fact it's analogue, and New Zealand's going to shut down analogue transmissions in 2012 in favour of digital. The digital Freeview service was launched early last year and terrestrial Freeview broadcast is supposed to start in April[1].

I ambled into the LV Martins across the road from work to have a look at the TV sets they had there, and in a brief conversation with a salesperson, discovered that none of the TV sets had a digital decoder built in. I can buy a plain ol' LCD TV set, but I'd have to buy a set top box, and frankly I can't see how you'd balance one on one of those thin LCD sets. Tsk.

I think they said it would take a year for built in boxes to be in TVs.
Although I'm already on digital... just a pity Saturn can't provide Freeview.
(Not that I'm watching TV these days, I've lost any tolerance I've had to ads...)

I still watch the occasional show. At the moment Lost, House, and Boston Legal (and the Trek repeats on Prime, but Prime's still not part of Freeview)...

Yeah, I watch Lost and House too... just not with ads...

LCD TV is a scam. Never buy LCD screens of any sort.

Eh? What's wrong with LCD TV?

I use them at work. They suck suck SUCK. A simple old CRT one is much better.

Saturn? Christ, those pirates are still going? I remember when 'NZ's first cable TV service' (available in Waikanae and Seatoun, and nowhere else, cos no-one has the cables laid) gave us such great channels as...the Armed Forces Overseas Network! Woooooooo! :)

I use an LCD monitor at work and it's fine. :)

Besides, there's a difference between LCD TV sets and LCD computer monitors...
