Why NZ's new internet law sucks

Filed in: Internet, Tetrap.Local.

Recently John Key took some time off from flying around the country in helicopters so he could organise the NZ government to, well, basically bend over and take it from US copyright trolls. Starting in September, we'll have a law whereby the entertainment industry can accuse someone of copyright violation and have them cut off from the internet, guilty until proven innocent.

But don't take my word for it, Christopher Wood goes into it in more detail in 13 reasons why the Infringing File Sharing Act is bad for you.

I'm so glad the New Zealand government is spending its time on important things.

Let's be honest. The main reason the geeks(*) are complaining is "I might get caught."

(*)It really is an extreme minority who cares, and who are very vocal online. Most people in most places will see this as a good thing because they don't use the internets.

Ah, but according to Google NZ has an 83.4% internet usage rate which is a pretty decent chunk of the country.

There's also the fact that the geeks also know that it's very easy to connect to wireless routers and download movies using other people's internet connections. I wonder how long it will be before a school or big university is cut off because of someone leeching internet from them. The guity-until-proven-innocent clause will make it very hard for the school to prove it wasn't someone there.

Hmmm, I wonder if in the case of a school, if the school itself is an individual interms of the prosecution, or if the defendant would end up being the Ministry of Education?

Try this again, there was a court case in the US in which the judge ruled that an IP address did not count as a person for the purposes of a subpoena.

Hah! Take that!

One hopes the judges here are as internet savvy :)
