Map of Confexia

I was playing the Battle of Celeste this morning and noticed that there are a couple of subway maps in a couple of places (near objectives 4 and 9). Being a curious sort, I took a snapshot (click on it to enlarge):

I was interested to know whether it matched any real subway system. With the help of Google and the fine folk in #DrWhoChat, I tracked it down: It's Frankfurt's subway system, only mirrored.

Junkyard Escape bug

I've found an odd and annoying bug in the UT 2004 level Junkyard Escape. The level is a parody of a British show in which people built stuff out of junk they find in a junkyard. The attacking team has to fix their vehicle and escape from the junkyard while the defending team has to stop them.

The first objective is to retrieve the "power core" shown at right and return it to the vehicle in order to fix it. What I've found is that if the person carrying the power core doesn't make it back to the vehicle, the bots lose track of what they're supposed to be doing and just head for a random position and stand there.

In Example Shot 1, the attacking team has started congregating at a point just a couple of metres from the power core they're supposed to be picking up. In Example Shot 2, the attacking team has decided to regroup in front of the checkpoint, which is no where near the power core. In Example Shot 3, they're bunched up in front of the building housing the vehicle... those clouds of smoke in the latter two shots are from sniper rifles.

The sequence of events are as follows:

  1. Someone picks up the power core. The announcer feels the need to mention this three times.
  2. The person carrying the core dies on the way back to the vehicle. You will notice in this shot that there are now two power cores - one which has been dropped and one which is still strapped to the bot's back. At this point, if there isn't a human on the team, the attacking bots can get no further...
  3. Sometimes if you're lucky, someone grabs the real power core and continues on to the vehicle.
  4. or sometimes the original person makes it back to the vehicle, but the game forgets to take the power core off them.

I dunno if that's a bug they introduced in a patch or what, because I don't remember this happening before...

Also another odd bug: when playing back a demo (it doesn't do it while playing the actual game), my character isn't wearing the power core on his back and appears to be wearing it like armour(!)

Edit: There's a line in the readme for the last patch which I'm now wondering if it's related:
- Fixed (for assault) the energy core always showing on the HUD even if it not the current objective (thanks AngelMapper)

I couldn't find anywhere on Atari's site to report the bug though...

Edit: This is, in fact, fixed in the 3369 patch. Yay!

Messing with bots & patches...

I had two questions answered yesterday:

Q: Why don't some of the bots turn up randomly in Instant Action games and some do?

This turned out to be easy to fix: the .upl files in the system directory hold the definitions for bot characters. Getting them to turn up in instant action games turned out to be matter of finding the appropriate .upl file, and editing the part of the bot's definition from (for example) menu="MALCOLM" to menu="".

Edit: also, setting BotUse=1 is essential!

Q: How come, after installing the last patch, I had a bunch of Onslaught levels marked "(Bonus vehicles)" but they were no different when I played them?

That turned out to be because I had to install the UT 2004 ECE Content Pack, which comes with three new vehicles (including the Cicada, shown right), six characters (finally the Necris turn up again...) and four new Onslaught maps (Dear Epic, please put out some more Assault maps, kthxbai). I also installed the lasted game patch.

They should also fix some of the bot behaviour. Things like... ooo, bots forgetting that it's alt-fire on the link gun to heal vehicles and nodes... bots getting stuck places and/or running their vehicles into walls and staying there for the whole match... Or hanging around one node brcause there aren't any vehicles there instead of jumping to another node...

Also, I can't be the only one which finds it annoying that the male "nightmare" characters (Mr. Crow and so on) have half their taunts delievered in the default merc male voice.

Cool Unreal Tournament Tool

I downloaded the first Community Bonus Pack for Unreal Tournament last night... I grabbed the ut4mod version, which automates installation. Unfortunately when I went to install it tonight, I discovered that the file associations for the ut4mod file type were still missing due to the last Windows reinstall.

Fortunately there's a utility called UT2Kx Regcheck which can fix up your file associations for you, and also reinsert your CD Key into the registry - useful for the very situation I've described above. Kudos to the author!
