Yes, this sucks, I had to work around it.
You can copy the disk using an analog copy technique, just like dubbing tapes in the good old days. I did this using my Harmon Kardon CDR2, it supports both analog and digital copy. So when I copied the disk, my new disk had a FAT (file allocation table) that contained the list of files, and now I can rip them to MP3
